Today started off with a visit to the Abu Dhabi Dates Market. I was thinking it would be indoors but it was just a few rows of shops and then the fruit/veg market right beside it. I’m not the haggling or turning someone down type so when the first man held the door open to his shop we decided to go in…
Within seconds of entering he appears with 2 little packets of individually wrapped chocolate covered dates and insists we try them, then it’s a tray of medjool ones and other ones he called protein but I wasn’t too keen on those ones. The next thing he appeared with were almond and pistachio covered chocolate. The chocolate covered dates we tried first were really good so we decided to get 3 bags (it was buy two, get one free) for us, my mum and Stefan’s mum and 500g of the medjool ones. He did try to get us to buy the bigger and dearer ones but luckily he accepted that we preferred the normal ones without trying to haggle because if there’s one thing I hate it’s being overly pushy…
Once we came out the first shop we just walked along in front of the other 5 or 6 shops, turned down about 3 requests to go in and then walked down the side of the fruit/veg. Funnily enough we were only asked if we wanted to buy mangoes once...
We decided after walking around to go to the mall where the Indian restaurant was that we had wanted to order from the night before so I booked the Uber and off we went… when we got to the mall (Reem) we quickly realised we were in the wrong place because I had gotten the names of the malls mixed up! We should’ve been at the Al Maryah mall down the road. It was too far to walk back in the heat so we just decided to get something to eat in the Reem mall…
The restaurants are really spread out at Reem so you couldn’t really tell if you were going to find another place to eat or if you were just going to end up walking in circles so we ended up eating at a Chinese place we had walked past. We got lava rock shrimp and prawn wontons as a starter to share, I got mapo tofu which I had always wanted to try and Stefan got fried rice with turkey and prawns. We usually taste each other’s food but because my tofu didn’t come with rice we ended up just sharing it all.
After lunch we walked around the mall and straight into the Virgin Megastore because they sell Loungefly - or at least some of them do - but they didn’t have any and neither did the Geekay store next door but a few minutes later we were walking past a store and Stefan turns around and notices a whole wall of Loungeflys (Funko). I just wish he wouldn’t lead me into shops and then not ask which one I’m going to get… there must’ve been at least 8 I would’ve bought straight away but there were loads more… I might not have got one yet, but I am determined I am not leaving here without one.
We got a taxi back to the hotel and went for a drink at the beach club. It was quite busy, being a Sunday, but you can pay your way in I think so there were quite a few people there that weren’t staying at the hotel. After our cocktails we headed back upstairs for a lie down because we both had a headache - the smell of sandlewood in the malls can get quite overpowering and the Reem mall was worse than any others we’ve been in…
We left the hotel at 7:30pm again and headed to the World Trade Centre for some dinner and ended up at Nando’s. When we’re on holiday we don’t usually like going places we can get at home but we don’t live in the UK so this was an exception. I forgot to take pictures of the mains and prices though… they did have some other things that you don’t get at home like the chicken in cashew cream sauce Stefan had or skewers of chicken thigh (I’ve added a screenshot of the menu)… afterwards we wandered around the mall a bit trying to find a lift that would take us up to the Irish pub (The Irish Vicker’s) on the 6th floor and after going up and down I don’t know how many times, we finally found the right lift (the rest only went to the 3rd floor) right opposite Nando’s!
We had a drink in the pub, came back to the hotel, went for a walk in the grounds to get our steps up and headed back upstairs to have our Cinnabons, we got in the WTC, in front of the tv
Tomorrow we’re off to Warner Bros World… we’re definitely not thrill seekers so there’s a few rides we won’t go near but we’re looking forward to it so I better get some sleep… night all!
